Homeownership rates in the U.S. have returned to their pre-pandemic levels, settling at 65.4 percent for the nation. The same can not be said for New Hampshire, where homeownership rates are still down 1 percent compared to their 2019 values. In spite of this, New Hampshire still has one of the highest homeownership rates in the country at 74 percent.

Rob Dapice, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, says that construction is the problem. “For decades, the production of new housing has failed to keep pace with demand in our state,” Dapice said. “The most obvious solution to our state’s housing challenges is to build more homes and remove excessive zoning obstacles that hinder this from happening.” New Hampshire isn’t in trouble yet, but with housing costs and mortgage rates rising, it is no surprise that the Granite State has not recovered as quickly as the rest of the nation.
